Membership

You have to be a member to borrow items from the library. It costs £3 to join for the whole academic year. Before you can take CDs out, you have to pay a security deposit. This is returnable whenever you decide to terminate your membership, and is just held in case you disappear with our CDs. You can pay a £20 deposit which allows you to take three CDs at a time, or £40 for six.

Borrowing

Most CDs can be borrowed for a week. New releases (items which we have bought within the last nine months) can only be borrowed for 2 working days (e.g. Tuesday-Thursday or Friday-Tuesday). This helps to ensure that everyone gets a chance to borrow them. Members can borrow up to three new items at a time. New releases are kept on the top shelf on the right hand side of the library - please ask at the desk if you're not sure where this is.

Prices

Members can take out a CD at a cost of 50p (boxed sets are £1). Vinyl is free to borrow, along with CDs by local artists and CDs which came with magazines. Overdue items incur a small fine to ensure items are returned promptly and available to everyone else. See below for a full price list.

Late Returns and Damages

Any damages or losses must be paid for, including damage to the booklets and packaging as well as the discs. The CDs are the responsibility of the borrower until they are handed to a member of staff at the library. If you are unable to return items during opening hours, they may be left in a clearly labelled envelope at the Students' Union Treasury or Reception desks, sent by post or internal mail AT YOUR OWN RISK. If you wish to return items by post, our address is on our contact page. If you're having trouble returning an item, please contact us to let us know; we try to be flexible, within reason.

Ethos

We are here to help you get the most out of your membership and your music. We don't make any profit - all the money you pay us goes back into buying new CDs and running the library. All of the staff are volunteers, giving up their own time to keep the service running. We try to buy as much of our music as possible from independent record shops. Occasionally things go wrong or we make mistakes. If that happens, please let us know and we will try to sort things out.

Copyright Terms

We are an authorised music lending library, affiliated to The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (formerly The Library Association). In accordance with lending copyright agreements, CDs cannot be borrowed until three months after their official release date. To find out when a CD will become available for loan you can find the release date on the Amazon UK website.

Please respect copyright regulations, and support the music industry by buying CDs from your local record shops and by attending live performances.
